Tommy waited for the uproar. Anticipated having to tug Dog down from the high horse he’d climb on. But that didn’t happen. Dog eyed him back, no malice in his expression, only a narrowing of the eyes, as if he churned the words over in his head, deciding how to respond. Where was the anger? Where was Dog shouting, “Who the fuck do you think you are, sonny boy?”

This wasn’t how Tommy had expected it to go and, intrigued, he waited some more. From the corner of his eye, he noted Frankie stiffen, ready to pull his gun, while Stan appeared steady, just as interested as Tommy to know the outcome.

“How’s that then?” Dog’s hands hung loose by his sides. No clenching of fists. No twitching fingers.

“Penny handed everything over to me. I have the paperwork—you’ll be wanting to see it, no doubt.”

“Explain things to me.”

Does he suspect I know about the deal he had with Penny? I bet he wants me to ‘explain’ so he can work out what I’m aware of and get his story straight. Or his lies. “He’s been asking questions. About Bobby. You might be wondering why that has anything to do with handing the south to me…”

“Ah. He thinks he’s Bobby’s dad, got it into his head for some reason. Between you and me, I reckon he’s losing his marbles.”

“He didn’t think, it was true.”

“What?” Dog’s face betrayed him. His eyes bulged, and his mouth dropped, but only for a second. He composed himself and cleared his throat. “Well, fuck me sideways.”

Tommy had always planned to reveal this, but he had to receive assurance, in front of witnesses, that Dog would keep the intricacies of it to himself. “Long story. I trust you’ll never repeat what I have to say?”

“Of course I fucking won’t.”

“You’d better not.” Tommy paused to give strength to what he’d said: If you don’t behave, I’ll come after you. He didn’t turn his head, keeping his sights on Dog. “And you, Stan?”

“I see everything but say nothing if that’s how my boss wants it.”

Tommy had a feeling that would be the case. “So, I may as well begin then. Basically, Davey was shagging a prosser called Vanessa at the same time as Penny—no idea if my old man knew whether he was sharing her or not. She gets up the duff, so Dad takes the kid on, thinking it’s his. Gets Mum to shove a pillow up her fucking skirt and make out she’s pregnant. He gave her some old guff about Vanessa killing the kid once it’s born, making out it was an act of goodwill that they play out that farce, not that he was the father.”

“Bloody hell. Your mother is something else. So she took on a kid because she thought it’d be murdered?” Dog’s expression was one of the utmost respect.

Tommy nodded. “She did. Kept it a secret for years, hated herself for lying an’ all. Us kids, we thought Bobby was our brother—so she lied to us, too.
